Introducing...Dirtbird!

Occasionally in my wanderings, I will meet not just tattooed people, but tattoo practitioners, and often those visiting from outside of New York City.

So it was no surprise, when I approached a gentleman across the street from where I work, at 31st and 7th, to learn that I was talking to an artist.

Working out of Punkteur Tattoos & Piercing in Joplin, Missouri, Derek "Dirtbird" Wieberg estimates he has 130-150 hours of work inked on his personal canvas.

With so much to choose from, he offered up this piece, on the right side of his neck:


It seemed fitting, considering his name.

Dirtbird praised the artist, Rick Pierceall at Karma Tattoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has done all of his throat work.

That's not Dirtbird, but it's his handiwork! The owner of this tattoo is Shawn, who had the good fortune to be inked by Dirtbird. They collaborated on the design together.

Ride the Cyclone!

In college we had a game room at the Student Union.

I claimed to be a master at Arkanoid, but would occasionally play pinball. Earthshaker was fun, but there was another, carnival-themed game that would often beckon, "Ride the Cyclone!" It was, naturally, called The Cyclone.

Fast forward ten years and I would be residing in Brooklyn, home to Coney Island and the original Cyclone.

Despite having been in close proximity a number of times, I've never gone for a ride.

I was reminded of this back in September when I met Matt at the top of the escalator at the Penn Plaza Borders store.

He shared this amazing tattoo:


This is, of course, the Cyclone.


Matt is working on a Coney Island/"Carnie" theme, having lived in Brooklyn most of his adult life. Thus, the Astroland tower behind the Cyclone in the tattoo. Next up: the Wonder Wheel and the Parachute Jump, other Coney Island attractions.

Something Girly This Way Comes

I met Nadya one afternoon in the beginning of October in Borders on Penn Plaza.

She shared this tattoo, which covered up a date she had initially inscribed on her arm:


Nadya told me that she wanted something "girly".

What I found most interesting about this tattoo is that when I asked her who the artist was, she told me it was her father. I can't imagine tattooing my own daughter. I would be too nervous!

Happy Thanksgiving!

In honor of the holiday, I am sharing this, my newest tattoo, located above my knee on my right thigh:


This was done at Hand of Glory in Brooklyn yesterday as part of the shop's $75 Thanksgiving Tattoo Special and was sponsored by Troll Skin, produced by Skin Actives Scientific.


For those of you just tuning in, check the pre-post here, which includes all the Thanksgiving flash designed for the occasion. I asked readers to vote on which tattoo to get, and this one sneaked out a narrow victory over the traditional Native American profile.

I like this design because it combines a lot of traditional tattoo elements and delivers an image with a sociopolitical subtext. We have the traditional American flag and handshake designs, but the added element of crossed fingers serves as a reminder that, despite apparent good intentions, there was subsequently a historical betrayal of that initial good will.

But that's just one perspective, of course, and the Thanksgiving holiday focuses on the positive in our society. The mere existence of the tattoo reminds me to be thankful, which I alluded to in my original post.

I was fortunate enough to have Brian Faulk as my artist again. He had inked my Friday the 13th tattoo last August, and I appreciate that he works quickly and concisely.

It was nice, also, that this design was one of his contributions to the flash sheet, as he was kind enough to embellish slightly on the original design, and it always seems better when an artist is tattooing his or her own design. As for the idea behind it, he was trying to represent graphically a broken treaty. I'm extremely pleased with the end result.

In consideration for their sponsoring this tattoo, I will be exclusively using Skin Active's product, Troll Skin Aftercare over the next two weeks as the tattoo heals. I can already say I am pleased with the aftercare cream because it is a lot less messy than the ointment I am used to using within the first 72 hours after getting a tattoo.

I'll report back then on how their product held up compared to the regiment I've followed in the past.

Tato atau tattoo, berasal dari bahasa Tahiti "tatu" yang konon artinya tanda. Walaupun bukti-bukti sejarah tato ini tidak be- gitu banyak, tetapi para ahli mengambil kesimpulan bahwa seni tato ini sudah ada sejak 12.000 tahun sebelum Masehi.
Dutu, tato menjadi semacam ritual bagi suku-suku kuno seperti Maori, Inca, Ainu, Polynesians, dan lain-lain. Kalau Anda jalan-jalan ke Mesir, coba main- main ke piramid, mungkin Anda bisa menemukan tato tertua di sana. Karena menurut sejarah, bangsa Mesir-lah yang jadi biang tumbuh suburnya tato di dunia. Bangsa Mesir kan dikenal sebagai bangsa yang terkenal kuat, mereka melakukan ekspansi ke negara-negara lain, sehingga seni tato pun ikut-ikutan menyebar luas, seperti ke daerah Yunani, Persia, dan Arab.




Apa alasan bagi suku-suku kuno di dunia membuat tato ? Bangsa Yunani kuno memakai tato sebagai tanda pengenal para anggota badan intetijen mereka alias mata-mata perang pada saat itu. Di sini tato menunjukan pangkat dari si mata-mata tersebut. Berbeda dengan bangsa Romawi, mereka memakai tato sebagai tanda bahwa seseorang itu berasal dari golongan budak, dan tato juga dirajahi ke setiap tubuh para tahanannya. Suku Maori di New Zealand membuat tato berbentuk ukiran-ukiran spiral pada wajah dan pantat.

Menurut mereka, ini adalah tanda bagi keturunan yang baik. Di Kepulauan Solomon, tato ditorehkan di wajah perempuan sebagai ritus untuk menandai tahapan baru dalam kehidupan mereka. Hampir sama seperti di alas, orang- orang Suku Nuer di Sudan memakai tato untuk menandai ritus inisiasi pada anak taki-taki. Orang-orang Indian melukis tubuh dan mengukir kutit mereka untuk menambah kecantikan atau menunjukkan status sosial tertentu.


Tato alias wen shen atau rajah mulai merambahi negara China sekitar tahun 2000 SM. Wen shen konon artinya "akupunktur badan". Pertu diketahui, sama seperti bangsa Romawi, bangsa China kuno memakai tato untuk menandakan bahwa seseorang pernah dipenjara. Sementara di Tiongkok sendiri, budaya tato terdapat pada beberapa etnis minoritasnya, yang tetah diwarisi oteh nenek moyang mereka, seperti etnis Drung, Dai, dan Li, namun hanya para wanita yang berasal dari etnis Li dan Drung yang memiliki kebiasaan menato wajahnya. Riwayat adat-istiadat tato etnis Drung ini muncul sekitar akhir masa Dinasti Ming (sekitar 350 tahun yang talu), ketika itu mereka diserang oleh sekelompok grup etnis lainnya dan pada saat itu mereka menangkapi beberapa wanita dari etnis Drung untuk dijadikan sebagai budak. Demi menghindari terjadinya perkosaan, para wanita tersebut kemudian menato wajah mereka untuk membuat mereka kelihatan kurang menarik di mata sang penculik.

Meski kini para wanita dari etnis minoritas Drung ini tidak lagi dalam keadaan terancam oteh penyerangan dari etnis minoritas lainnya, namun mereka masih terus mempertahankan adat-istiadat ini sebagai sebuah lambang kekuatan kedewasaan. Para anak gadis dari etnis minoritas Drung menato wajahnya ketika mereka berusia antara 12 dan 13 tahun sebagai sebuah simbol pendewasaan diri. Ada beberapa penjelasan yang berbeda, mengapa para wanita tersebut menato wajahnya. Sebagian orang mengatakan, bahwa warga etnis Drung menganggap wanita yang bertato terlihat lebih cantik dan para kaum Adam etnis Drung tidak akan menikahi seorang wanita yang tidak memiliki tato di wajahnya.



Di Indonesia Orang-orang Mentawai di kepulauan Mentawai, suku Dayak di Kalimantan, dan suku Sumba di NTB, sudah mengenal tato sejak zaman baheula. Bahkan bagi suku Dayak, seseorang yang berhasil "memenggal kepala" musuhnya, dia mendapat tato di tangannya. Begitu juga dengan suku Mentawai, tatonya tidak dibuat sembarangan. Sebelum pembuatan tato dilaksanakan, ada panen enegaf alias upacara inisiasi yang dilakukan di puturkaf uma (galeri rumah tradisional suku Mentawai). Upacara ini dipimpin oleh sikerei (dukun). Setelah upacara ini selesai, barutah proses tatonya dilaksanakan.


BAHAN PEMBUAT TATO

Awalnya, bahan untuk membuat tato berasal dari arang tempurung yang dicampur dengan air tebu. Atat-atat yang digunakan masih sangat tradisional. Seperti tangkai kayu, jarum, dan pemukul dari batang. Orang-orang pedalaman masih menggunakan teknik manual dan dari bahan-bahan tradisional. Bangsa Eskimo misalnya, memakai jarum yang terbuat dari tulang binatang. Di kuil-kuil Shaolin menggunakan gentong tembaga yang dipanaskan untuk mencetak gambar naga pada kulit tubuh. Murid-murid Shaolin yang dianggap memenuhi syarat untuk mendapatkan simbol itu, dengan menempelkan kedua lengan mereka pada semacam cetakan gambar naga yang ada di kedua sisi gentong tembaga panas itu.

Jauh berbeda dengan sekarang. Saat ini, terutama di kalangan masyarakat perkotaan, pembuatan tato ditakukan dengan mesin listrik. Mesin ini ditemukan pada tahun 1891 di Inggris. Kemudian zat pewarnanya menggunakan tinta sintetis (tinta khusus tato).

Bahkan, perusahaan Freedom-2 di Philadelphia telah menemukan serangkaian produk tinta yang lebih aman di kulit. Produk ini sudah disetujui Badan Urusan Makanan dan Obat-Obatan AS (FDA) untuk digunakan dalam dunia kosmetik, makanan, obat, dan peranti kedokteran - yang tentunya aman untuk tato.


MAKNA TAT0

Pada sistem budaya yang bertainan, tato mempunyai makna dan fungsi yang berbeda-beda. Di Indonesia sendiri, pernah ada masa di mana tato dianggap sebagai sesuatu yang buruk. Orang-orang yang memakai tato dianggap identik dengan penjahat, gali, dan orang nakal. Pokoknya golongan orang-orang yang hidup di jalan dan selalu dianggap mengacau ketentraman masyarakat.

Anggapan negatif seperti ini secara tidak langsung mendapat "pengesahan" ketika pada tahun 1980-an terjadi penembakan misterius terhadap ribuan gali (penjahat kambuhan) di berbagai kola di Indonesia. Mantan Presiden Soeharto dalam otobiografinya, Soeharto: Pikiran, Ucapan, dan Tindakan Saya (PT. Citra Lamtorogung Persada, Jakarta, 1989), mengatakan bahwa petrus (penembakan misterius) itu memang sengaja dilakukan sebagai treatment, tindakan tegas terhadap orang-orang jahat yang suka mengganggu ketentraman masyarakat.

Bagaimana cara mengetahui bahwa seseorang itu penjahat dan layak dibunuh? Brita L. Miklouho-Maklai datam Menguak Luka Masyarakat: Beberapa Aspek Seni Rupa Indonesia Sejak Tahun 1966 (Gramedia Pustaka Utama, Jakarta, 1997) menyebutkan bahwa para penjahat kambuhan itu kebanyakan diidentifikasi melalui tato, untuk kemudian ditembak secara rahasia, lalu mayatnya ditaruh dalam karung dan dibuang di sembarang tempat seperti sampah.

Tidak semua orang bertato itu penjahat memang. Tapi mengapa sampai terjadi generalisasi seperti itu? Apa kira-kira dasar atasannya? Apakah dulu kebetulan pernah ada seorang penjahat besar yang punya tato dan itu lalu dipakai sebagai ciri untuk menggeneralisasi bahwa semua orang yang bertatto pasti penjahat juga? Sayangnya belum ada studi mendalam yang bisa menguak pergeseran makna tato dari ukiran dekoratif sebagai penghias tubuh dan simbol-simbol tertentu menjadi tanda cap bagi para penjahat.

Tapi yang jelas telah terjadi "politisasi tubuh". Tubuh dipolitisasi, dijadikan alat kendali untuk kepentingan negara. Dalam kasus petrus di Indonesia, tubuh yang bertato dipakai sebagai alat kendali, suatu alasan untuk menjaga stabilitas negara. Untuk tingkat dunia, bisa disebut beberapa contoh kasus politik tubuh besar sepanjang sejarah peradaban manusia. Orang-orang kulit putih menerapkan sistem politik apartheid di Afrika Selatan hanya karena orang-orang Afrika "berkulit hitam". Dari Jerman, Hitler dengan Nazinya membantai orang-orang Yahudi hanya karena di dalam tubuh orang Yahudi tidak mengalir darah Arya, darah tubuh manusia yang paling sempurna yang pernah diciptakan Tuhan di bumi ini menurut Hitler.

Sebelum tato dianggap sebagai sesuatu yang modis, trendi, dan fashionable seperti sekarang ini, tato memang dekat dengan budaya pemberontakan. Anggapan negatif masyarakat tentang tato dan larangan memakai rajah atau tato bagi penganut agama tertentu semakin menyempurnakan citra tato sebagai sesuatu yang dilarang, haram, dan tidak boleh. Maka memakai tato sama dengan memberontak terhadap tatanan nilai sosial yang ada, sama dengan membebaskan diri terhadap segala tabu dan norma-norma masyarakat yang membelenggu. Orang-orang yang dipinggirkan oleh masyarakat memakai tato sebagai simbol pemberontakan dan eksistensi diri. Anak-anak yang disingkirkan oleh keluarga memakai tato sebagai simbol pembebasan.

Setiap zaman melahirkan konstruksi tubuhnya sendiri-sendiri. Dulu tato dianggap jelek, sekarang tato dianggap sebagai sesuatu yang modis dan trendi. Kalau era ini berakhir, entah tato akan dianggap sebagai apa. Mungkin status kelas sosial, mungkin sekadar perhiasan, atau yang lain.
